How Class Effects Your Tips In A Horse Race
By: DAVID GATELY

What do you look for to find a winner?

This is the question I hear more than any other in this sport.

When looking for a winner at the races, the first thing we look at at OzRacingForm.com.au is CLASS, allow me to elaborate:

No.1 - Does the horse have the ability or "scope" to win the race you are assessing? In other words, what has been the horse's "peak performance"? Remember: A horse (just like any athlete) can always put in one bad run, but they cannot 'fluke' a great run. They either have the ability, or they do not. A great trainer will be able to get that horse to hit it's peak more often, but I digress...

If the horse has not reached the level of the race, do not categorically say it cannot win. Look at his/her career so far. Does he/she have the "scope" to come to a new level? Often if a horse is early in it's career or races greenly but shows ability, it will have improvement in it. This can be a very good way of finding up and coming (read: value) winners! Train yourself to look at wayward horses and check how many starts they have had, over what distance, are there any gear changes today that may help him/her concentrate better?

No.2 - Does the horse seem to keep improving as he/she is stepped up in distance? If this is the case, keep following it. Horses generally improve after their first attempt at a new distance range so stick with him/her. E.G. A horse steps to 1600m for the first time and seems to "improve" 2-3 lengths. His/her next start at 1600m (even up in grade) is a big tick.

This is rule no.1 we follow at OzRacingForm.com.au - Does the horse have the ability to win the race you are assessing, or, does he/she have the scope (or improvement) in him/her to win it.

Good luck !
